VOLUME 2 : NUMBER 19 : MAY 11, 1984 CAMPUS SECURITY Security Patrols MAY 1 5 1984 VCOVANCOUVER VOCATIONAL INSTITUTE LIBRARY In the past the security officers have been able to give assistance with a number of things that were not really part of their duties and this has been a great deal of help. However, commencing 1984 05 14, there will be changes made with the security personnel that will only allow them time to follow their specific duty instructions and to look after emergencies. To this end you are reminded that security is the responsibility of the departments, and to please ensure that windows and doors are closed and locked when areas are not in use, and that all machines are turned off. Campus Keys There has been an increasing number of occasions where keys have been reported lost. This presents a serious problem as it is an expensive matter to have locks re-keyed and it also weakens our security system. Please take extra care with the campus keys that are issued to you. GBC Thefts Recently there has been a rash of thefts from campus offices with the main victim being purses! Do not leave your valuables in plain sight or just tucked under a desk on the floor. Lock them m a desk or a filing cabinet and help cut down on their disappearances. RGS LIBRARY FILMS May 15 (11:45 in the Library Screening Room) THE RAILRODDER A Buster Keaton adventure that sees him crossing Canada from east to west on a railway track speeder. BY GUESS AND BY GOD A tongue-in-cheek account of the pioneers of Canada's airmail services and the difficulties they faced in flying planes which were just off the drawing board. l^NCOU&^R COMMUNITY Vocational Institute 24 HOUR RELAY The marathon in support of the Lion's Society for Cripple Children, the "24 Hour Relay", will be start on June 23rd at 10:00 am and continue until 10:00 am on June 24th WI staff, faculty, and students (former and current), have combined to make a team totally from our own campus for the first time and will be guided by team leaders John Spencer, Myrna Breikss, and Dalton Kremer. Each team member will run at least three times for three miles during the 24 hours and each runner will be seeking support from others in the way of team pledges. (The average team will run approximately 200 miles during the course of the event)! If you have any spare time on that weekend please come out and provide support for our team -- this year (though by accident) WI's team will be the only one representing VCC. If you would like to run please leave your name with Dalton Kremer as some scheduled runners have already had to withdraw and backups will be needed! DK WI COUNSELLING Barbara Slater and Kathleen Scales are two interning students presently doing their practica with the Counselling Department here. They are both from the Department of Counselling Psychology at UBC where they are completing the requirements for their Master's degrees. They will be working with Counselling and Student Services until June 1 and bring with them a broad range of experience as a result of a number of years working in the educational system in B.C. Welcome! DK WI LEARNING SUPPORT CENTRE The extended hours for the Learning Support Centre (Monday to Thursday until 7:30) have been in operation since April 24th and would all instructors please remind their students of this service. The tutors, Anne Chow and Gordon Wong, in response to requests from Department Heads and Instructors, will individually try and visit each Department on a scheduled basis to obtain material for the Support Centre and familiarize themselves with each program area while maintaining the tutoring service. Thanks for your cooperation and assistance. DK NEW POLICY AND PROCEDURE Following is a draft of a new policy and procedure proposed for the campus. If you have any observations or comments, please forward them in writing to the office of John Vandenakker, Dean of Administrative and Student Services. BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoke is not only harmful to the smoker but equally, if not more so, to the non-smoker. In air conditioned buildings air is exhausted less to save energy, which aggravates the problem on campus. POLICY: A.l Smoking is not permitted in classrooms, labs or similar group activity areas. A.2 Smoking is not permitted in food servery areas and food sales areas. A.3 Smoking is not permitted in any area which cannot be divided naturally into a non-smoking and smoking area. A.4 Smoking is not permitted where fire is a serious hazard and danger. A.5 Smoking is not permitted in areas where sensitive electronic equipment is stored or in operation. A.6 Smoking is not permitted in any storage areas. A.7 Smoking is not permitted in instructional areas which have vinyl or carpeted floors. A.8 Smoking is not permitted in stairwells, elevators and the parkade. A.9 Instructional Departments may, on their own, establish non-smoking areas within their space. A.10 Smoking is not permitted in hallways and student lounges with vinyl and carpeted floors. A.11 An office area may be declared a smoking area if all employees working in the area agree to it. PROCEDURE: B.l All signs indicating non-smoking areas shall be of uniform nature and installed through the Building Service Manager only. B.2 Smoking shall be permitted in all malls, hallways and student lounges subject to A.l. B.3 Proper ashtrays shall be located in all smoking areas. B.4 Violators shall receive warnings from the person responsible for the area and, if this does not help, be subject to normal disciplinary procedures.
