V6B 1S9 Director of International Education I am pleased to announce that Donna Hooker has accepted the position of Director, International Education. Her first day will be Monday, December 2, 2002. Donna has an MBA degree from Athabasca University, and has increased her expertise with a balance of business and public education experience. She has had extensive international education experience working with contract services and as a Board Director with the BC. Centre for International Education (BCCIE). With the B.C. Institute of Technology (BCIT), she was employed as an instructor of business courses, supervisor of the International Student Centre, and coordinator of international students. Donna also managed marketing and program development for BCIT, including the development of international contracts. Her most recent employment was as Managing Director of a Kester Grant College/BCIT project, in which she was management consultant responsible for strategic business and marketing planning and implementation. In this position, she also acted as human resource coordinator organizing academic and administrative teams. I know this extensive experience will be of great benefit to VCC's International Education Department, and I ask that you join me in welcoming Donna Hooker to Above: Donna Hooker newly appointed Director of International Education. Vancouver Community College. Linda Martin Vice President, Advancement and College Services Who Says Major Gifts Don't Fall From The Sky? Last month, CF-Science received two fabulous gifts: a data projector and a laptop computer. Wow! What luck! There was a small degree of luck involved in this story, but the relationship between an enthused student and a receptive, caring team of instructors was pivotal Student, Simon Rosengarten, was really impressed with his learning experience at VCC. He was particularly enthused about his CF-Science instructor, Peter Ballm. Simon was an eager learner. Peter's team of instructors helped Simon discover his ability to succeed. It's a VCC story you've heard many times before. Last year, Simon's father, Dr. Herbert Rosengarten, coordinated the World Assembly of Mental Health in Vancouver. After the assembly, the coordinating group disbanded and was required to dispose of its assets. Dr. Rosengarten had heard all about Vancouver Community College from his son. He had learned that VCC had wonderful instructors, and that VCC was an inspiring place for a mature student. VCC was the first place he thought of when asked to find a new home for a data projector and a laptop. And what has CF-Science learned through this process? Never underestimate the power of your relationship with your students, your PAC members, your personal community and business contacts, etc. You never know when those relationships will result in a major gift that seems to fall from the sky! Jane Westheuser VCC Foundation Here's An Idea! ^ ^ I-Develop a wish list of things your department needs. Small things, big things, cheap things, expensive things. You get the picture. Post your list in the classroom, in staffoffices, oninformation boards in the hallways, in Connections Let the world know what you need. Then cross your fingers. A little luck can't hurt • , . Page 2 Vol 8 No 9 www.vcc.ca College's Marketing Goes Big - Literally Go big. That's the approach that Vancouver Community College is taking with its latest marketing campaign - an outdoor advertising effort that puts our name into the market in a big way. VCC's billboard campaign - featuring three VCC culinary graduates - rolled out in early October in high-traffic locations around the city, giving the college tremendous visibility m the community. "These billboards take the college name into the community in a big way - literally," says VCC's Vice-President of Advancement and College Services, Linda Martin, whose responsibilities include marketing "We're able to reach a tremendous amount of people this way," she says. "These billboards give us substantial impact for an extremely modest cost." There are more to come: billboards will be in place through October and November for the first part of the campaign, which will expand to focus on trades and health over the coming Left- Zoro Mihajlovic (Media Services Designer), Stephen Barrington (Director of Marketing), and Dale Dorn stand in front of months "We need to get the college name the first ofZoro's billboard creations. out there," says marketing director Stephen Barrington "This campaign is about raising awareness and putting Vancouver Community College in front of the public." "That's the first step. That's critical to the college's ongoing success," he says. "Education today is a competitive marketplace and we need to be visible." Some of the locations of the college billboard advertising: * Georgia and Cardero * Main and 49th * Burrard and Fourth * Clark and 1st * Smithe and Homer * Kingsway and Knight * Broadway and Cassiar Above/Right: Wide-angle and close-up shots of the new backlit panels designed by Zoro Mihajlovic. Work on the campaign was done m-house, with strategy, creative development and design coming together from Marketing Et Communications and Media Services departments: Barrington, Elizabeth Thomson, Lauch McKenzie and Zoro Mihajlovic. Among other collaborations of those two departments: new backlit signage at the college's downtown campus, where the southeast corner of the building is now aglow promoting VCC.ca. "Our Web site is a major vehicle to tell people more about the college," says Barrington. "This backlit signage is just one of the ways we're working to give better prominence to VCCca." Vancouver Community College recently allowed me to put up two sandwich boards One is at the Pender Street entrance and the second is inside the College. They have a list of places where a person can get free meals, clothing, shelter and showers The hope is that we can help direct a person in need to a local service. The other hope is to discourage aggressive panhandling near VCC and inside the building. Many people have told me they have felt intimidated by panhandlers, and this is one possible solution. Safety Lectures I am available to provide safety lectures to staff and students who work or attend school in the downtown area. I am unable to provide them for other areas of the city Other Police Officers are available for locations outside the downtown core. Contact me for further details.
