Well Done Susanne ... you bring glory to VVI and VCC! IT'S OPENLNO, IT'S CLOSEDLNO IT'S OPENLNO IT'S CLOSEDL..BUT YES ... THIS TIME IT'S REALLY OPEN - FOR GOOD!! JACKIE SANDY and GEORGE CLARK tell us that "to the best of their knowledge" all the noisy jackhammering work is now finished and as a result J. J's RESTAURANT is now officially open once again for breakfast, lunch and dinner. KiNCOUflR COMMUNITY Vancouver Vocational Institute 1 HOW TO SPEND MONEY BUT SAVE! SAVE! SAVE! HANS RERUP tells us that the VCC Alumni Association is selling two valuable coupon books, through the VVI Bookstore, which could save you hundred of dollars on entertainment, family dining, movies, sports events and retail shopping. Once again the popular "ENTERTAINMENT 90" books are available to you for only $40, and the "SAVING SPREE" booklets for only $10. Dr. Rerup asks that you support the VCC Alumni Association by buying these books. Don't forget you're also doing yourself a favour too! So run, don't walk, down to the Bookstore to buy one (or both) of these coupon books! SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS DANA FISTER writes to tell us that the following students were recent award winners: IRIS LOTT (Medical Secretary) was awarded the Hazel Bezeau Award given by the Canadian Association of Medical Transcriptionists). ANN SCHMIDT (Electronics Telecommunication) was awarded the Canadian National Scholarship for Women in Trades. PAUL LEADBEATER (Drafting Architectural - Steel) was awarded the Canron Scholarship for Drafting Architectural - Structural Steel Students. ANA LOPES (Accounting) was awarded the Certified General Accountants Con¬ tinuing Education Scholarship. GEORGINA RONNING (Accounting) was awarded the Certified Management Accountants Scholarship. KAREN SIMPSON (Dental Assisting) was awarded the Chaim Zbar Award. Everything you ever wanted to know about the WORK STUDY PROGRAM! DANA FISTER (obviously the muse, was with her!) also writes to tell us the following: The Work Study Program is operated as an extension of the Canada and B.C. student Loan Programs. The Program is designed to assist full-time post-secondaiy students with education and living costs when their own resources, and those of their families, are determined to be insufficient. Students are to see the Financial Aid Advisor (Dana) to see if they qualify. Departments may submit job descriptions/requests for Work Study Student Aides to the Administrative Manager (Loma Guenard). The objective of the program is to help students meet a portion of their financial needs through on-campus employment opportunities. Page 2 GET OUT YOUR WALLETS - ITS TIME TO GIVE! JOHN VANDENAKKER, this year's United Way Chairman tells us that this year's committee (consisting of JEROME SCHATTEN, STEPHANIE FORSYTH, TAMMY ROBERTS, BARBARA CAMERON and JACKIE GELLING) will be running a low-key campaign this year - but one that will still provide plenty of opportunity for you to give. As this year's United Way slogan says "We'd like you to give more, and we need more of you to give". John will be advising us during the next couple of weeks what activities are planned for this year and we hope that you'll all participate in one way or another! STILL CONTEMPLATING THE BULGE AND WONDERING WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT? SANDRA JONES writes to say that the VVI Fitness Group is back at it. She invites anyone who would like to join them to call her (local 299) or WYNN KEEN AN (local 200). The group gets together on Monday, Wednesday and/or Friday, from 12:10 to 12:50 for a "little exercise" (at least that's the way Sandra phrases it, having seen some of the participants returning from a fitness session I suspect it's a wee bit more than a "little exercise"!!!) PERSONAL COMPUTERS Last week the College told you (in a special Spectrum edition) how you could get a free loan from VCC towards purchase of a P.C. (up to a value of $2,400). This week JIM GOARD of VCC 's Computing Services writes to say: "Previously, university bookstores could sell IBM computers only to faculty, staff, and students at the university. Recently, IBM announced a new program that allows the UBC Bookstore to sell to VCC faculty, staff and students at UBC prices. Packard Bell, a manufacturer of IBM compatible computers followed suit. I'm told that UBC's prices are good, but as always, caveat emptor." THINKING ABOUT CHANGING JOBS DEPARTMENT... The following positions are open for applications. INSTRUCTOR - JAPANESE COOKING - VVI Closing Date: 1989 September 30 3. ASSISTANT HOMESTAY COORDINATOR - International Education -CE Closing Date: 1989 October 27 or you might want to work for the B.C. School Trustees Association: they're looking for an EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. If you 're interested write to: Kyle Mitchell or Alec Wallace of the Tanton/Mitchell Group Ltd. at 710 - 1050 West Pender Street, Vancouver, V6E 3S7. Or phone them at 685-0261. Page 3 ARE YOU INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING TO HELP SENIORS? Recently the V ancouver Health Department's VOLUNTEERS FOR SENIORS IN CONTINUING CARE team approached us with a unique request... would employees at VVI be interested in "adopting" a nearby seniors residence and helping to co-ordinate interesting activities for them? The idea was discussed at management committee recently, and we're now testing the waters through the INSIDER to see if anyone at VVI is interested in helping out with such a project. And there's been a second suggestion, also concerning seniors. Many seniors who live in the downtown core use our campus as a place to eat, get their hair done, or just socialize with friends. The idea would be to get some of these VVI seniors "regulars" to organize special social events on campus for that downtown seniors group. Again, we want to know if anyone out there is interested in getting involved in this kind of activity. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED call Barbara Cameron, Communications Officer, VVI, Local 400... and please leave a message. Thank you! AND CONGRATULATIONS: THE DENTAL ASSISTING/ RECEPTION DEPARTMENT is delighted to announce the safe arrival of WAYNE RICHARD CANON, their adorable new copier!!! V5T 4N4 Telephone 875-1131 Fax 872-5377 September 22, 1989 ANNOUNCEMENT Expansion of the post-secondary education system in B.C. prompted by the government's Access for All Program together with rapid social and economic changes within our own community have prompted the need for the College to pay much more deliberate attention to the managing of our own future. Accordingly, there will be the immediate establishment of a planning office to direct the appropriate studies and make strategic recommendations regarding the long-term directions for VCC. I am pleased to announce that, effective immediately, Hans Rerup has agreed to head up this new function as Director of Strategic Planning. Hans brings to his new duties a wide experience in educational, physical, and financial planning from his role as WI Principal, his work with the College's Executive Committee, and his activities with several ministries of government. An integral part of this initiative will be the support to Hans Rerup from the Office of Institutional Research coordinated by John Cousineau. John will report to Hans and help provide much of the information required for effective planning. There are no immediate plans for the appointment of a new WI Principal. Rather, the existing WI management team will operate our City Centre Campus. I know that you join with me in supporting Hans Rerup and the WI people in the challenges that lie ahead.
