BCun^-t r<- i ^EP ' G jggj The College Board approved the emergent need temporary funded courses for four classes in Hairdressing apprenticeship training and four classes in Electrical Journeyman Upgrade training on behalf of the IBEW Training Board. The College Board approved the following new program Purpose and Objective Statements: Computer Aided Drafting I (Upgrade) Computer Aided Drafting II (Upgrade) Computer Aided Drafting - Systems Management Refrigeration Operator The approval by the College Board of a Purpose and Objective Statement means that the College may issue either a certificate or diploma for that program. As a result of the College's submission of requests for special allocation for capital funds, the Ministry of Education has approved the allocation of $200,000 for the purchase of a new telephone exchange for the Langara Campus. The current telephone exchange is rapidly aging and falling apart, and the replacement is needed m order to avoid the possibility of not having any telephone connection with the Campus. The College Board approved this allocation. HWR ITEMS FROM THE PRESIDENT'S REPORT A final report on the Conference 84 - Canadian Vocational Association/Association of Canadian Community Colleges, has been completed and has been submitted to the two sponsoring associations. The Conference, which took place in Vancouver between May 28th and May 31st, attracted 1,080 paid delegates. Total revenue was approximately $219,000; expenditures were $198,400. The surplus will be shared between the two associations. Next year's Conference will be in St. John's, Newfoundland. A one-time grant of $55,000 has been allocated to Vancouver Community College by the Ministry of Education to assist in the enrolment of Handicapped Students in regular classes. The funds have been distributed to our four teaching divisions as well as our Library Services. The Vancouver Foundation has allocated a total of $60,000 in block grants for student aid for the 1984/85 academic year. Grants are $15,000 for K.E.C., $25,000 for Langara Campus and $20,000 for the V.V.I. Campus. These grants represent a substantial increase over last year's allocation of $27,000 for the entire College. We are, of course, most appreciative of the Vancouver Foundation's recognition of the need, as well as their efforts in identifying the necessary funds to meet that need. PERIODICAL REVIEW BOARD STEERING COMMITTEE The following letter was received from Mr. John Seebach, Periodical Review Board Steering Committee: "In June of this year a steering committee was formed to formulate a process for establishing a review board to screen and approve adult magazines prior to their distribution in British Columbia. STRUCTURE OF BOARD The review board will consist of three full time members plus an alternate to substitute in the event of illness or absence of one of the full time members. One of the members will be a chairperson and will be responsible for communicating the board's findings to the distributors and authorities. FUNCTION OF BOARD The function of the review board will be to screen all issues of adult publications both pictorially and editorially. The time required is estimated to be approximately 8 hours per week. The board members will review the publications individually and advise the chairperson with a yes or no on each issue weekly. Publications found not acceptable by a majority of the board would be reported by the chairperson to a representative distributor who would communicate the board's findings to the remaining distributors in British Columbia. TERM OF OFFICE The term of office for board members will be a maximum of three years with the initial terms staggered so that one new member will be appointed each year. CRITERIA FOR REVIEW BOARD Decisions as to whether a publication is acceptable for distribution will be based on the Criminal Code of Canada, the B.C. Attorney General's guidelines and contemporary Canadian community standards. PAY STRUCTURE ยง FUNDING There will be an honorarium of $850.00 per month for the chairperson and $650.00 per month for the members. The alternate will receive a per diem of $50.00 per meeting and will receive the member's portion of honorarium while substituting. The board is funded by the 10 magazine wholesaler distributing in British Columbia who are members of the Periodical Distributors of Canada.
