Writing 0755 The grammar portion of this course focuses on usage, punctuation, and tenses. Guided writing, and narrative and descriptive paragraphs are also introduced. English 059 Writing 0765 This course includes advanced grammar, English usage, paraphrasing and academic paragraph writing. Reading 0766 This course aims to improve comprehension of passages at the Grade 10 level, vocabulary, reading speed, and study skills. Oral Skills 0767 This course includes taking lecture notes, participating in class discussions, expressing opinions, and making researched oral presentations, both singly and in groups. English 098 English 099 Writing 0885 Writing 0995 This is mainly an essay writing course, with additional practice in paraphrasing and summary writing. Students learn to edit and redraft their own work. Reading 0886 This course includes comprehension of passages at the Grade 11 reading level, textbook reading skills, and continued work on reading speed and vocabulary. Inferential reading skills are stressed more than at the 059 level. Oral Skills 0882 The emphasis in this course is on developing speaking skills around the topics Communication in the Workplace, Canadian Culture, and two of the following optional topics: Employment Issues, Literature, Canadian Environment and Geography, and/or Current Affairs. English 1102 Prerequisites: minimum C in English 1101 at VCC or its equivalent at another institution. The College Preparatory English program is designed for advanced students of English as a Second Language who wish to prepare for study at Canadian colleges, universities, or other post-secondary institutions. Prospective students require a good general educational foundation. Completion of Grade 10 or equivalent is recommended as a minimum standard.
