Born September 30, 1985 weighing in at 8 lbs. 14 oz. . \, STEERING COMMITTEE UPDATE The Decision Making, Managing and Planning subcommittee of the College Evaluation steering committee has identified from the June survey the following issues or shortcomings that pertain to our mandate: 1 Staff Development 2 Community input into College planning and operations 3 Communications 4 Management techniques A problem of low morale was also recognized, but was assumed to be a symptom of other problems. We are now asking for additional information from the College community about whether: - these issues are valid concerns - major issues that pertain to the mandate of our subcommittee have not been missed - there are suggestions on how to improve these areas If you would like to comment on the above or propose solutions, please do so with me or alternatively drop a note in my letter box. President's Report September 1985 VVI CAMPUS 1. VCC/VVI HAIRDRESSING DEPARTMENT The Hairdressing Apprenticeship program was scheduled for three class streams. The 45 students (all from industry) enrol in a month-long program which prepares them for the provincial tradesperson's qualifi¬ cation examination (T.Q.). There are monthly intakes for the year (a total of 450 students for the year). In August, 1985, the Department had been asked to train an additional 200 to 400 students by March, 1986. Mrs. Janssen re-analyzed her human and capital resources and through astute reorganization the Department will be able to intake 330 additional students between September, 1985 and March, 1986. Mrs. Janssen, Department Head, and her faculty are to be congratulated for their quick and positive response. 2. VAMCOUVER EXECUTIVE'S ASSOCIATION (VANEX) Dr. Marvin Lamoureux, VCC/VVI Dean of Instruction addressed this group on 1985, August 28. Approximately 75 members were present for a luncheon at the Georgia Hotel. The topic: "Vocational/Technical Education - What VANEX Can Do For It, and What Can Be Done For Vancouver Businesses", was well received. An immediate response will be a "Business After Business" visitation to the VCC/VVI Campus by approximately 150 Vancouver Board of Trade members on 1985, October 8. Mr. Tony Wood, VCC/VVI Service Division Chairman is coordinating the project. 3. UPGRADE TRAINING - IRONWORKERS The VCC/VVI Drafting Department has acquired a contract from Local 97 Ironworkers Trade Improvement Committee to conduct a blueprint reading course. This contract resulted from a meeting of Lower Mainland labour union educations at VVI., approximately 8 months ago. Such familiarization meetings are a common occurrence at the Campus. Many result in training contracts. 4. NOVATEL - A CONTRIBUTION TO VVI'S ELECTRONICS DEPARTMENT Eight VTR-2881 radios and GCH-81 hand sets (in total) have been contributed to the VVI's Electronics Department. Mr;. United Way Campaign The kickoff for the VCC United Way Campaign will be held on Thursday, October 10, 1985 at 12:30 p.m. at China Creek Park (Glen Drive and Great Northern Way) adjacent to the King Edward Campus. The kigkoff will highlight the start of the Huge crowds of participants and spectators are expected. 2. COLLEGE-INSTITUTE WEEK The first annual College-Institute Week in British Columbia will be the week of November 4, 1985. The purpose of the week is to draw public attention to the contributions made by colleges and institutes to their communities and the province. Mrs. Elizabeth Jarvis, Chairman of the Board, has been reappointed to represent the.B. C. Association of Col leges on the Board of the Educa¬ tional Research Institute of B.C. 2. UNIVERSITY PLANNING A B.C. University System PIanning Conference - for Board members, senior officials of universities and government, and the Universities Council - will be held in Victoria at the end of November. There will be a VCC presence on the program. 3. TOURISM INDUSTRY Vancouver Community College is the sole educational institution to be represented on the newly-formed Advisory Board of Governors of the Tourist Industry Association of B.C. 4. FORUM AFRICA The launching of a major cross-Canada public participation project will take place throughout British Columbia and the Yukon on October 18 and 19. Growing out of the recent extraordinary response of Canadians to pleas for African relief, this project - supported by the federal government - will involve ordinary citizens in advising government on issues related to African relief, aid, and development policy. The colleges throughout the province will serve as the focal points for this project, with Vancouver Community College playing the leader¬ ship and co-ordinating role for this discussion-media event. Cam - Avery is heading the VCC initiative. 5. GUGLIELMO MARCONI MUSEUM, NOVA SCOTIA The VVI received expressions of thanks from the Italian Ambassador to Canada for the work of 17 ex-students from the restaurant and food services department who donated their time to prepare and serve dinner at a fund-raising event for this museum. The Premier of our province and other dignitaries were present at the event. This donation by our ex-students will be officially inscribed on the B.C. wall of the museum.
