VVINSIDER : VOLUME 6 : NUMBER 6 : MAY 6/88 THAT'S ILLEGAL! If you're all DOSed out trying to get each WordPerfect, chances are you are part of the PC revolution currently happening on campus. Many of us spend more time in front of our computer terminals conversing in computereez than we do communicating with our colleagues! Along with the convenience and efficiency of computers comes a certain responsibility regarding their use. John Vandenakker stresses we should all be aware that: "The use of illegal computer software is prohibited by VCC and VVI policies and will definitely not be supported by the Computer Services Department." We should also be familiar with the actual policy as it appears in the VCC Policy and Procedures Manual: Policy: A.l Computer software, television programs, sound recordings, printed matter or any other copyrighted or patented material, to which the rights are not owned by the College or an instructor, or for which the rights are not in the public domain shall not be reproduced without written permission of the owner of those rights. A.2 The copyright/patent for curriculum/instructional materials prepared by an instructor without the use of College time, services or materials, shall belong to the instructor. A.3 Where the College's time, services or materials are used in the production of curriculum/instructional materials, the copyright/patent shall belong to the College, unless prior written permission to the contrary has been obtained by the individual from the College (under Section 12(3) of the Copyright Act). A.4 College equipment, services or other resources shall not be used to support infringement of copyright. Procedures: B.l Employees wishing to reproduce copyrighted materials shall mncouvm be responsible, through the campus Library, for obtaining, in JSVJITV writing, permission to do so. couegI^s/^ VCC-VANCOUVER VOCATIONAL INSTITUie Vancouver — LIBRARY MAY P fflgf Vocational institute - 2 - B.2 Upon request, the Library will undertake the procedure of locating and obtaining information about permission to copy from copyright holders. B.3 Computer software is generally the proprietary product of its creator or vendor. It is protected by copyright and trade secret laws. It is licensed (not sold) for use on a computer system, and is licensed only on the condition that an end-user Agreement is signed and returned to the copyright owner. All computer software licenses require the signature of the Dean of Instruction before mailing. B.4 Campus printing and word processing requests of copyright material require the signature of the Dean of Instruction before being activated. VVI PARTICIPATES IN NATIONAL TOURISM WEEK Those of you who have eaten at J.J.'s during the past week know from the custom made "placemats" that our Tourism and Hospitality Division is taking advantage of National Tourism Awareness Week May 16 - 22, 1988 to promote our local tourism industry as well as our industry training programs. Display Booths: Three display booths will be set up in the following locations: VVI Mall Area May 16 - 20th King Edward Campus Multi-Cultural Festival Day, May 18th Vancouver Trade and At the Tourism Industry Assoc. of B. C. Convention Centre Trade Fair Friday, May 20th 12-8 pm. Hospitality Race: Our hospitality students have issued a challenge to other hospitality students in the Vancouver area to participate in the first ever VVI "Hospitality Race". Rain or shine the race will begin at 10:00 am at the Vancouver Trade Centre. The first three winners will not only receive a prize, they will also earn a bursary to be awarded to the Winner's Training Institution ($150 for 1st, $100 for 2nd and $50 for third place). - 3 - WI...ON DISPLAY! The VVI "Road Show" is definitely busy this month. In addition to the Tourism week displays mentioned above, the Business Division is participating in the B.C. Business Education Association Spring Conference this week, and later this month our Traffic, Customs and Transportation program is participating in Transportation Week. Slowly we are adding to our "visual repertoire" so that our display unit looks more dynamic. VVI AT THE KEC MULTI-CULTURAL FAIR Interested departments are invited to participate in our booth display at the KEC Multi-Cultural Fair Wednesday, May 18th. The Counselling Department will be on hand to answer general questions regarding VVI programs, but some space is available for individual departments that would like to participate. If you are interested, please contact Sue McAuley, Local 410 as soon as possible. SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT THE FAIR From an International Food Bar to a Citizenship Court Ceremony, KEC's Multi-Cultural Fair definitely has something for everyone! Check out the schedule of events attached so you don't miss out on the festivities of interest to you. RUN! RUN! RUN!...PLEDGE! PLEDGE! PLEDGE! Time to get in shape for the LIONS SOCIETY FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN 24 HOUR RELAY. Whether you choose to exercise your muscles as a member of the VCC team, or your wallet in support of our efforts, contact Stephanie Jewell in Administration (Local 233) or Dalton Kremer in Counselling (Local 216). The VCC President's Office has paid for the registration fee. All we have to do is field a team. Last year's team raised approximately $2,700. This year, we'd like to double it! The team will run approximately 200 miles in the 24 hours, and a pledge for two cents a mile would be about $4.00. Last year, a field of 155 teams (20 runners each) raised $781,000—the biggest 24 Hour Fund Raiser in Canada! So come on you former runners, new instructors, students, support staff, administrators or alumni! We need runners, volunteers and pledge collectors to make this college-wide endeavour a success! - 4 - HAVE WE GOT A DEAL FOR YOU! Get a head start on summer now by signing up for tanning sessions. Just $25.00 buys you 10 sessions, or pay $3.00 per session to get that "I've just spent a week with Don Johnson on Miami Vice" look! Sessions are available on an appointment basis from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Speaking of looks, Redkin Shampoo and Conditioner is also available at a great price. Both the Shampoo and the Climatress Moisturizer are selling now for $3.95. Or, if smelling good is just as important to you as looking good, stop buy and sneak a sniff of our new line of perfumes. They smell like the real thing (various brands), but the cost is definitely affordable! LOTTERY UPDATE! I'd like to tell you who won the April 29th draw, but I just can't. I was so sure it would be my turn this week. After all, it's only fitting that if I have to write about the Lottery every week, I should at least be one of the winners! So, instead of telling you that Dr. Richard Pearce of C.E. won yet again, I'll spend my time trying to convince Dr. Pearce that this free publicity in the VVInsider actually has a price tag. (Would you believe $1,000?)
