'/ REPORT ON THE ORIENTATION WORKSHOP FOR I.R.A.'s (held January 26, and 27, 1994 at City Centre Campus) The VCCFA Collective Agreement provides for 2 days orientation leave for new Instructors with Responsibility Allowance (I.R.A.'s). The Orientation Leave Committee (Sonja Alton, Jean Cockell, Syd Hartley, Sam Lewindon, and Eva Sharell) with input from the Councils of Educational Managers (CEMS) planned the Orientation Workshop which was held at City Centre on January 26, and 27, 1994. Since this workshop was the first of its kind all LR.A.'s, new and old, were invited. Thirty-three of the sixty-four King Edward and City Centre I.R.A.'s participated. The committee would like to thank all the 27 people from various parts of the College who made presentations. These presentations included budgeting, accounting, purchasing, Admissions, Counselling, Student Services, Employee Relations, VCCFA Collective Agreement, VMREU, harassment issues, and meetings management. The seventeen people who submitted evaluation forms made some excellent comments and valuable suggestions for the next workshop. Especially emphasized were the following: useful and appropriate handouts; excellent, well prepared presentations. Participants particularly enjoyed presentations given in the non-lecture mode. One comment that appeared often on the evaluations related to information overload. When this remark appeared, it invariably was followed by suggestions that shorter, more frequent sessions would be useful and perhaps more satisfactory. Nevertheless, most of the participants gave the session a "thumbs up". As one long-term Department Head wrote, "Even though I'm^new I.R.A., I found the presentations to be very informative, and I enjoyed getting together with instructors who are doing the same job that I am doing."
