I understand that UBC is selling Apple Macs at a good price. As well, both Tandy and Commodore are offering new pricing discounts for faculty. At VCC we recently negotiated an arrangement with Zenith for a bulk purchase of the Zenith 150 microcomputer. This is an IBM PC compatible. If you are interested in acquiring one, please contact Jim Goard at the computing centre at Langara. A system with 256 KB memory and two disk drives (without printer or software) will cost about $2800, including PST. JV Do You Need a Little Help? Do You Have a Lot of Patience If you can answer "yes" to both of the above questions, the Business Department may be able to provide you with some help. As part of their program, the Clerk-Typist and Administrative Clerk students are required to complete a 3-day practicum doing office work. This is an extremely important part of our students' training, and we are looking for places on campus for our students to fulfill their practicum requirements. If you would like to participate in our practicums, or if you would like more information, please call Margaret Wise, Instructional Assistant, Local 364. At this point, an exact amount for severance costs cannot be given. Furthermore, a final decision on the centralization of printing has not been made. In the event that the budgeted savings of $170,000 for printing are not realized, the amount of $351,056 will have to be reduced accordingly. For all these reasons, commitments for renewal projects are not possible at this time. Hopefully, some resources can be made available at a later date, when fewer uncertainties cloud the horizon. At any rate, it was felt useful by Board members in attendance at the February 14 meeting of the Administration Committee to be advised, albeit in preliminary fashion, of the types of activities being considered by the College Executive Committee for potential funding as Renewal projects. The students were also monitored 2 or 3 times during the afternoon. The College received good public relations from this function and the voluntary participation by faculty and students. UPGRADING THE WEST COAST METAL FABRICATION INDUSTRY Under the project leadership of Mr. R. J. Wren, VCC/VYI Industrial Division Chairman, a team, made up of Mr. B. Dwyer, Program Development Department Head, and Mr. Ron Atkinson, Drafting Department Head, has developed a joint training proposal with Burrard Yarrows Corporation of North Vancouver. This $5,530,000 proposal's purpose is to upgrade the metal working, steel fabrication, and shipbuilding work force on the west coast of Canada. The major training components will include computer aided drafting, design, manufacturing management and robotics. Burrard Yarrows Coporation and the VVI Campus will present the proposal to Western Canadian Shipbuilding Consortium as well as Canada Employment and Immigration Commission for funding requests beginning with the new fiscal year. The proposal has two major location alternatives: either a full satellite campus of Vancouver Community College on the Burrard Yarrows North Vancouver site; or at the Vancouver Vocational Institute campus. DENTAL TECHNICIAN JOINT PROJECT WITH UBC DENTAL STUDENTS The combined Dental students of UBC and VVI have completed a pilot project in the area of casting removable, partial dentures. The project provides that the UBC Dental students prescribe a specific design and the VVI Dental Technician students carry out the work, as instructed, by designing the framework, first in wax and plastic, and then fabricating the metal framework. The students in the Dental Technician program have indicated a strong sense of accomplishment from participating in this project and producing something very close to the "real thing".
