The installations increase reflected light by 116 per cent, allowing the number of fluorescent tubes to be reduced by a third to a half and increasing energy savings by 57 per cent, the university said. Yearly savings, once all 11,000 fixtures are converted, were estimated at $300,000. COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY, reported it had reduced travel costs $300,000 a year by opening a campus travel office, centralizing travel purchasing, and computerizing airline charges. CUMBERLAND COUNTY COLLEGE said it had saved $5,000 while recarpeting its library by using a special crane to move bookshelves without taking the books out. PROVIDENCE COLLEGE, converted its oil burning heating plant to a "fluidized bed combustion" system that can burn cheaper coal with any amount of sulfur content and still meet the most stringent emissions standards. At the same time, some buildings were converted from steam to hot-water heat, increasing the amount of steam available for generating electricity. Annual savings were estimated at more than $1.4 million. THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON has started using bar codes, like those read by supermarket check-out machines, in its physical-plant department. Employees use a bar-code scanner to record automatically their employee-identification project number, and time spent on the job. Yearly savings of $172,000 were reported. MEL
