I 3 A Condensed History of Vancouver Community College (or, What's In A Name?') Robert Sharp, With the vision and foresight and hard work of two of its officials Superintendent, and Bert Wales, Director of Adult Education - the Board of rather Trustees of the Vancouver SchoolBoard gave birth to a healthy youngster of giving name not unusual period it the August 7, 1965 long in its inceptive (or Vancouver City College. It was actually a forced delivery in that it brought together "melded" as the verbiage was in those days) three functioning post-secondary schools: the Vancouver Vocational Institute, the Vancouver School of Art (now the autonomous Emily Carr College of Art) and the King Edward Senior Matriculation and Continuing Education Centre. The "umbrella" was Vancouver Community College the College Board having taken the courageous step approximately ten years after the birth of the college to change its name from "City" to "Community". ThenameKingEdward...asschool...ascollege...ascentre...ascampus...has been part of the woof and fabric of the life of Vancouver since shortly after the turn of this century. Originally named Vancouver Hish School, the school, in its early years, also served as Vancouver College of Mcgill University. With the coronation of Edward \rll. permission was sought, and granted, to re-name the schoolin honour of the new :nonarch. A nine-foot portrait of King Edward VII was commissioned by the school ':oard of the day and, for many years, his imposing figure greeted faculty, staff, s:udents and visitors. The name "King Edward" has persisted even though the srrposes, programs, services and governance of the institution have changed. \\'hen the planning committee was asked to recommend an appropriate name for ::€ :eru campus, the unanimous decision was to retain the old name, complete with :.:e :ortrait of Edward VII untilrecently mounted at the Langara Campus in a room .;. :.:. I bears his name. The gift of the portrait by Langara Campus, to be appropriately at the new campus, is much appreciated. - ::::::ei S.:.:e early \972 when the old campus at West Twelfth Avenue and Oak Street was re,::a.:zec for College use, the programs and services of the campus have expanded €rlcrr^.r -S,;'. From a relatively small enrollment of only a few hundred full and partt:::e s:*ie:ts in 7972,for the term just completed, King Edward Campus enrolled or,er ,:--'s:udents a remarkable increase in ten short years! - VarcouvER Couece aND c.q,!rpt-s Instructional Programs and Services to be provided by the College at the New Campus The College Board, after a series of meetings in 1976, determined that a new campus for Vancouver Community College was needed -preferably located in the *or" easterly part of the city - for the programs and services offered at and/or through KinS Edward Campus. The instructional programs then off.ered, and now a part o1 the curricula being provided at the new campus, are the following: to completion equivalency; secondary college foundations - literacy training through a condensed grade twelve equivalerrcy program for . training for skill development - basic vocationally-oriented students ; ' . - - programs for hearing and visually impaired adults; programs for reentry training: orientation for women; - employment basic employment skills training; - basic job readiness training; - native employment skills training; and, - vocational orientation for youth. occupational training programs: para-professional worker with the visually impaired and the hearing impaired; - homemaker - introductory training; homemaker and institutional aide training; and, - pharmacy assistant training. a full range of English language training; a learning centre for students requiring additional tutoring. as well as an individualized educational program for (learning disabled) adults. (At the time of the initial planning for the new campus, govemment officials recommended strongly that facilities for the college's music program not be included at the new campus, it being assumed that the lease of the Mount Pleasant Centre on West Eighth Avenue would be continued.) The Continuing Education Division will be housed at the new campus, their programs and services will be directed from the south-urcst comer of the fourth floor. Finally, the Central Administration of the College and College Board itself will be housed on the fifth floor. Mixed into all of the above was the strong recommendation of an earlier Minister of Education to re-locate some of the spacetonsumptive programs at the Vancouver Vocational Institute to new facilities on less expensive land elsewhere in the city. body repair, auto Therefore, three of the mechanical trades progretms - auto from V.V.l. to K.E.C., have been transferred mechanics and diesel mechanics using space specifically designed for them. Other amenities, such as a cafeteria, lounges, faculty offices, an auditorium, parking, child care centre, etc.,are now available. Allare - or willbe appreciated by the college community. Unfortunately, fundingwas notavailablefor the gymnasium, deemed a necessityfor the campus and its immediate community. Thus, the challenge of raising funds for a remains. Hopefully, we'llnot gymnasium with or without government support have to wait too long. I 5 Vancouver Community College Board Members 1979-80, 1980-81, 1981-82, 1982-83 and 198il-84 In the past five years during which the new King Edward Campus was being planned, designed and constructed, community-minded men and women have served as members of the Vancouver Community College Board. Thank you. New King Edward Campus Facilities Planning Committee To plan the new campus, College President A. S. Manera, in the fall of.1979,asked K.E.C. Principal H. E. Pankratz to establish a working committee to take on the not insignificant task of defining for the architects what the new campus should be like. Committee members were frequently amazed at how quickly the architects were able to translate concepts and ideas into graphical form. While the majority of the committee members were already directly and immediately associated with King Edward Campus, representatives from Central Administration, College Resources, Continuing Education and the mechanical trades programs at the V.V.l. served on the committee as well. Most of the membersserved on the committee from its inception to the present; a few, because their rnembership on the committee was by virtue of other positions within the College, served for shorter periods. To all members, our thanks and appreciation for the nnny hours of lengthy discussions, debate and sheer hard work. It was r.uorth the effort! The following served as members of the K.E-C.
