SUE REYNOLDS, after many years of working in the VVI Bookstore is heading south to a warmer climate and brighter more hopeful prospects for the future...the Langara Bookstore. Sue has been the primary source of information at VVI on the whereabouts of esoteric items squirreled away many centuries before in obscure and dusty caverns and secret passageways of the VVI! (Where will we find four-ring binders now Sue???) Sue has been a good friend to many of us on campus, has fed us gourmet meals, kept us laughing for many hours and counselled us on the intricate ways that VCC and VVI operate. We'll miss her! feHNCOUfER COMMUNITY Vancouver Vocational Institute If you would like bid a proper farewell to Sue, then join us on Thursday, February 23, from 2:00 on in the back offices of IMS. Dick Kok has written to say that the Baking and Pastry Department made a large, and very beautiful, Valentine Cake to order for Ms. Glenn Close. Ms. Close has been nomi¬ nated numerous times for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category, but is probably best known for her roles in "Fatal Attraction", and "The Big Chill". LAYRA NORRIE, the VVI student who, un¬ der the supervision of her instructor, TOM VAN GROL, decorated the cake, was in¬ vited by Ms. Close to have lunch with her, her family, and the cast of the movie (tenta¬ tively titled "Immediate Family") which is currently being filmed throughout Vancou¬ ver. Pictures have been taken of Layra and Ms. Close et al, but unfortunately are not avail¬ able right now - we'll publish them as soon as we're sent a copy. ...and the accolades for the Baking Department continue... The Baking Association of B.C. held their annual Valentine Dinner at J.J.'s Restaurant and had, as their guest speaker, STEPHANIE FORSYTH the Division Chair for the Hospitality and Tourism Division. Ninety-four guests attended and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The Baking Association has asked us to publish their thanks to the instructors and students of the a la Carte and Dining Room and Lounge programs, for all their efforts in making the Valentine's Dinner such an outstanding success. Maybe this will inspire some of us to go and visit this beautiful and interesting land. Hfenya. is situated on the Equator in the heart of Africa, as a democratic republic Kenya enjoys a stable economy, tourism being a major foreign exchange earner. Kenya's beautiful scenery, wildlife, and wonderful beaches are the primary draws for tourists. fA/airobi is the capital city and, as compared to other african cities has better internal communication and transportation facilities, with easy access to international travel The population is very cosmopolitan in Nairobi, many multi-nationals have offices in this "City in the Sun", ^Situated 600 miles from Nairobi is Kenya's coastal town, Mombasa, an historical port dating back to the time when slave trade was rife amongst the early arab settlers. In addition to the very interesting and historic old town, Mombasa's shores have fine sandy beaches and hotels that offer the most modern accommodation. Ihe climate is very moderate, with sunshine throughout the year. The beauty of this country lies in its huge game reserves where wildlife, in its natural environment, is a prominent factor. Tradition and culture is still very much alive among the African tribes, the main tribes being the Luos, Kikuyus, Mkambas and Masais. Ihe official language is Kiswahili; although English is more popular, as Kenya had English colonial rule before it got its independence in 1963. The cash crops include Maize, Tea, Coffee, Sisal, Sugar-cane and Cassava. Kenya's immediate neighbours are Uganda and Tanzania and at one time these three countries formed an economic liaison called the East African Community. Now, however, they once again have independent economies. i^enya is a dynamic country and well worth a visit. Page 4
