VGG-VANCOUVER VOCATIONAL INSTITUTE FROM THE 'SCRAP BIN1 IN THE WELDING DEPARTMENT LIBRARY The Welding Institute of Canada (Vancouver Chapter) hosted this years annual 'STUMP THE EXPERTS NIGHT'! The event took place on April 27, 1984 at the Delta River Inn Hotel in Richmond and four teams competed: two W.I.C. teams from B.C. and two teams from the American Welding Society (one from Portland and the other from the Seattle Chapter). The W.I.C. team from the Kamloops area consisted of three Welding instructors (two of them are now Welding technologists), the Vancouver team consisted of Mr. Lea Roberts, C.W.B. Inspector, Ed Craig and yours truly . . . Eric Sukkel. Some of the V.V.I, welding students showed up to cheer them on and it must have helped because they came in first with the most points and the resulting trophy cup!! (If there are any disbelievers the cup can be viewed in the Welding Department). Everybody who showed up for this annual event appeared to have had a great evening out and a pat on the back to our guys in Welding!! VACATION TIME Please be advised that Tom McComb will be on vacation from May 4 to June 4 inclusive and during his absence Mrs. Kim Cabral will be assisting with his duties and responsibilities. TRRM MNCOVVER COMMUNITY Vancouver Vocational Institute NEWS FROM THE COLLEGE BOARD Following is a synopsis of items from the last College Board meeting: College graduates should be reminded of the existence of the V.C.C. Educational Foundation and the chance they have to contribute, as their circumstances allow, to this fund; the review of the Electronics Program by the College Executive Committee was accepted by the Board; approval was given to the Program Objective Statement for the Advanced Word Processor Program; the 1984/85 Enrolment Plan was presented to the Board for approval, which included for V.V.I, a: - 50% reduction in Men's Hairstyling; - 50% reduction in Hairdressing Pre-employment; - cancellation of the Skin Care program; - reduction of one stream of 18 Business Office Training students; - reduction of two streams of Drafting (from nine to seven). A further two streams will become Computer Assisted Drafting Upgrade; - inclusion of one stream of Word Processing; - deletion of Industrial First Aid and Payroll; - addition of two streams of Correspondence students in Power Eng.; - conversion of one stream in Electricity; - conversion of one stream in Computer Electronics; - reduction of 40% in Welding Training; - conversion of the Midnight Machinist Class; - minor increases in part-time courses; - reduction of one stream of 12 Practical Nursing students; - conversion of Dental Technician/Mechanics; - doubling of the training for Hospital Unit Assistant; - closing of the summer-gap in the Chinese Cuisine Program; the College Board received a general plan for balancing the 1984/85 expenditures with the available revenues. Tjhe general assumptions used to balance this 84/85 Expense Plan are: - cost of salary increments will be covered; - cost of severance pay for employees who will be laid-off will be covered; - no allowance for inflation will be provided either for salary or non-salary items. This means that any salary increase which is negotiated will have to be offset by a negotiated productivity improvement, whose budget impact will at least offset the cost of such salary increases; - a College-wide productivity improvement factor about 3.4% will be achieved; A nominal increase in cost of professional development expenses are included in this proposal for the V.V.I. The plan requires on the revenue side, a 30% increase in average tuition fees, though how the specific fees would change, has not been worked-out. The assumptions of 0% inflation, 3.4% productivity improvement and a 30% tuition fee increase is problematical. Tuition fees would generate 15% of gross expenditures after the increase. There remains the unresolved problem of the plan's expenditures still exceeding its revenue by $300,00, and this deficit must be eliminated. The College Board approved the principle of policy framework outlined above for the development of the detailed 84/85 Expense Plan. ASM THE MARGIN OF EXCELLENCE The Vancouver Community College with its network of industry advisory committees, its flexible approach to handling unique learning requirements, and its talent for productively changing people's lives, is one of our city1s great quiet resources. Business and industry today employ tens of thousands who learned their trade or profession at the College. While VCC is funded basically from governmental tax dollars, it also relies on the community it serves for assistance in providing training and education beyond the limits of 'good enough'. With governments finding themselves unable to raise their contributions, and students finding themselves unable to keep pace with tuition fees, the College has established a fundraising arm, the VCC Educational Foundation, whose sole purpose is the raising of funds to meet College goals beyond the just 'good enough'. The Foundation, with its own board, brings together the resources of the community with the goals of the College. The foundation is made up of representatives of the College Administration, the College Board and public spirited representatives of the community at large. John A. Pearkes is currently president and C. Howard Naphtali is Executive Director. How can you help the Foundation meet its goals? You can pledge a donation which can be tailored to your particular situation or interest. You may contribute to the Endowment Fund which in turn generates funds for the College. Name the foundation as a beneficiary in your will to perpetuate the benefits of your giving beyond your lifetime. There are several ways for you to help in the cause. You can not train for today with yesterday's technology. If you have an interest in providing support, please contact the Foundation office at 875-1131. There is a tremendous reward in knowing you have helped light a candle or helped someone reach beyond competence to the margin of excellence.
