Creating a safe and empowering environment
for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis learners

EDUCATION + COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Indigenous engagement advisors
VCC offers one-on-one assistance with program applications, funding research,
and educational planning.
Elders on Campus
VCC’s Elders on Campus program allows Indigenous learners to connect with Elders
to explore Indigenous ways of knowing and being, traditional teachings, and engage
in culturally reflective counselling.
Gathering Spaces
VCC’s Indigenous Gathering Spaces support the needs of Indigenous learners by
promoting cultural safety and belonging, as well as offering the use of computers,
printers, kitchenettes, and casual meeting areas.
Cultural expression
VCC hosts regular Indigenous-focused workshops, talks, performances, celebrations,
and recognition events including National Indigenous Peoples Day, Orange Shirt Day,
and Sisters in Spirit.
Furthering reconciliation through education
VCC is committed to honouring the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of
Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and responding to the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission’s Calls to Action addressing the historical exclusion of Indigenous people
in post-secondary education and career training. Our current initiatives include:
a purposeful Indigenous enrolment policy that guarantees spaces and flexible
payment deadlines for Indigenous learners,
career programs delivered on campus and in community, partnering with local
First Nations and the Native Education College,
a curated Indigenous book and film selection in the VCC Library, and
enhanced programming throughout the college that incorporates Indigenous
ways of knowing and being.

At VCC, we believe that learning is a
life-changing experience that impacts

Serving food security
To support local food security during the COVID-19 pandemic,
VCC opened its Downtown campus kitchens to produce thousands of
pre-packaged meals for vulnerable neighbours.
Giving in style
VCC’s fashion students regularly design and sew business attire which
is donated to charities like Dress for Success and YWCA Career Zone.
Showing pride
VCC’s nursing and jewellery students collaborated to design a pin that
identifies health care workers who appreciate the needs of trans and
non-binary patients.
Making smiles
Students in VCC’s dental programs offer free checkups to hundreds
of young children each year at our Tooth Trolley event.
Building connections
VCC’s CAD and BIM (drafting) students volunteer with Habitat for Humanity
Greater Vancouver, gaining on-site construction experience in the process.
Welcoming the world
VCC’s English as an additional language students provide tutoring to
refugees and newcomer families through community partners like the
Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House.

VCC’s health sciences students and instructors coordinate the largest
and most realistic annual earthquake simulation in B.C.

Types of Study
Degree
At VCC, you can earn full bachelor’s degrees in hospitality management (p. 19),
music (p. 26), and nursing (p. 23). These programs typically involve four years of
full-time study.
Associate Degree
Earn a standalone credential or a solid foundation for upper-level university
programs in as few as two years (p. 20).
Diploma
Get in-depth training and hands-on experience, becoming job-ready in two
years. Some diplomas can be used as credit towards VCC degree programs.
Certificate
Gain technical knowledge and experience that you can apply immediately in
the workplace. Most full-time certificates can be completed in less than one
year. Many certificates can be used as credit towards VCC diplomas.
Apprenticeship
Earn a B.C. trade certificate through a combination of on-the-job training
and classroom learning. Most apprenticeships take four years to complete,
with 80 per cent of your time spent working and earning an income (p. 33).
University Transfer
Start your university journey by taking first-year arts, science, or engineering
courses in small, supportive classes at VCC. Credits can be transferred to
post-secondary institutions across British Columbia (p. 20).
Prep/Upgrading
Earn a high school diploma or individual credits to use as prerequisites for
programs at VCC or other institutions. Most upgrading programs are tuitionfree, self-paced, and open to learners with any level of education (p. 32).
Continuing Studies
Expand your skills, earn a professional credential, or just learn something
new. VCC Continuing Studies offers a range of popular part-time classes
as well as certificate and diploma programs (p. 34).

What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship combines on-the-job training
with classroom learning and leads to a Certificate of
Qualification (CoQ) or “ticket” for a skilled trade that
is recognized by employers across British Columbia.
How long is an apprenticeship?
Most apprenticeships take four years to complete.
Apprentices spend about 80 per cent of their time on
the job, earning an income throughout their studies.
Is funding available?
Yes. Many apprentices are eligible for the Apprenticeship
Incentive Grant (up to $2,000 for men and $6,000
for women) from the Government of Canada. Other
scholarships and bursaries may also be available.
Do I need a job before starting an apprenticeship?
No. Apprenticeships can be started during high school,
after graduation, or at any point in your career. VCC
offers pre-apprenticeship (foundation) programs in
many popular trades.

What is a Red Seal?
A Red Seal is proof of excellence in certain skilled
trades that is recognized by employers across
Canada. A Red Seal Endorsement (RSE) is earned
at the end of an apprenticeship by completing a
comprehensive examination.
