Campus has been designated by the MoE as a training centre for instructors and administrators for a forestry-related project in northern Indonesia. Four trainees began a six-month program at V.V.I, on Monday, May 6, 1985. Two are administrator trainees and are assigned to the Dean of Instruction's office; two instructor trainees are assigned to Welding and Electrical Departments respectively, with an additional portion of their assignment being with the Program Development Department. V.V.I. & INTERNATIONAL RAIL TRAINING EVALUATION PROJECT V.V.I.'s Program Development Department Head, Brian Dwyer, was seconded by International Rail (Swan Wooster/B.C. Rail) to conduct an evaluation of a Canadian International Development Association (CIDA) funded project in Africa. He is presently in Africa, along with one other CIDA appointee from Ontario, analyzing the training facilities, instructor competency and program outcomes for various centres designed to train individuals to operate railway systems in various African countries. ELECTRONIC DEPARTMENT ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE William McBride, VVI Electronic Instructor, has just returned from a secondment by the American RCA Corporation in New Jersey which took him to Egypt to help start the development and operation of a TV station. Jim Kamm has returned from Pakistan, where he was seconded by CANEDCOM to help develop programming for radio/TV training. LOW COST DENTAL CLINIC Through to May 24, the dental program at V.V.I, is offering a low-cost dental clinic to those 20 years old or younger, providing fluorided treatments, cleaning and home-care instruction. Work is done by students under the careful supervision of professionals. FOOD TRADES DEPARTMENT Paul Sondrup received Canada's 1985 top prize in the Canadian Egg Marketing Board's "Extraordinary Egg Recipe Contest, Snack Division", for his original recipe, "Brunch-in-a-Bun". Mr. Sondrup was sent to Calgary where he received his award at the annual Canadian Federation of the Chef de Couisine Conference. NEW ZEALAND TRADE COMMISSIONER HOSTS V.V.I. DINNER As a part of a promotion for New Zealand food exports (farmed venison, mussels and passion fruit), their Consul and Trade Commissioner, Mr. T. J. Pervan, hosted a dinner at the V.V.I. Campus. Approximately 75 members of the B.C. Chefs' Association participated. B.C. CHEFS' ASSOCIATION CULINARY ARTS SHOW The V.V.I. Food Trade Department participated successfully in a recent Culinary Arts Show, winning a number of silver and bronze awards. The show, in which hotels, restaurants, post-secondary institutions and high schools participate, attracted many excellent exhibits from as far away as Seattle. B.C. FOOD TRADES SHOW The V.V.I. Campus and the V.C.C. Public Relations Department recently cooperated to participate in a colourful program advertising display at the B.C. Food Trades Show. The booth, which was prominently placed, was very well visited. B.C. HOSPITALITY RESOURCE CENTRE CLOSURE The Hospitality Centre at V.V.I. Campus closed its doors officially on March 29, 1985. All printed material was catalogued and shipped, together with furniture, to the Ministry's Post Secondary Resource Centre in Victoria. Film and video tape material has been transferred to the Library at V.V.I., from which it will continue to be available to all users.
