2 1 1987 VUU-VANCOUVER VOCATIONAL INSTITUTE \1olom£ .s LIBRARY HIP - HIP - HOORAAAHHHH! Congratulations, Kudos and Cheers to the VVI Day Committee: June Piry, - Dorothy Ho, Lorette Rogers-Unger, Dalton Kremer and Bob Malone for the fabulous event they gave us on Friday, March 27. Things must have gotten quite sticky for them when the original date had to be cancelled. However, despite all the traumas that they must have gone through, VVI Day was a complete and unqualified success. May there be many, many, more. For comments from the VVI Day Committee to you page 4. - see VROOM - VRQQM - VROOM - Part II Well congratulations you alert, eagle-eyed VVInsider readers.' Most of you enthusiastically entered our first "Spot the Typo" contest. However, that one was pretty easy - you knew naturally, that "fro" should have been "for" and the trick one "not" should have been "now". But they'll get more difficult from here on. So keep those eyes peeled.'! Incidentally, Joe Brown has asked us to re-remind you that: Carter Pontiac Buick Ltd. has donated a 1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo to the College which is being raffled with the proceeds going to financial aid for students. Raffle tickets are $2.00 each or $20.00 for a book of eleven tickets. REPORT FROM THE COLLEGE BOARD MEETING The Board approved lengthening the VVI Building Service Worker Program from ten weeks to three months. The Phillips Barratt litigation has not been settled. Dalton SMILE OF THE WEEK History repeats itself. That's one of the things wrong with history! VVI DAY A RESOUNDING SUCCESSI Thanks to everyone's participation and support/ the first VVI DAY was more successful than anyone could have anticipated. Over 250 employees pre-registered using the computer program developed for that purpose by Brock Elliott of the Computer Programmer program. Our thanks to Brock and to the Library staff for assisting with the pre-registration. Special thanks go to George Clark who did not stop "running" all day long and to Mike Foort, Security/ for assisting during his off-duty hours. Special thanks also go to those employees (too many to name) who introduced and thanked the speakers. Over 100 evaluations were returned out of a possible 300 - not a bad returnl The overall consensus was that VVI Day should be held at least once a year. There were numerous requests to have it held twice a year and many even suggested it be held more frequently than that. In answer to question 15/ "What was the highlite of the day for you?"/ many people responded/ "The whole day!" Prom the responses returned/ it was very clear that most people found mingling with other employees throughout the day one of the most outstanding benefits of the day. People were impressed with the quality of most of the workshops and were especially impressed with the luncheon (although some commented that there should also have been chicken and someone didn't like the beansprouts!). There were many suggestions for the next VVI Day/ and these will be recorded and passed along to the next VVI Day Committee. This year's committee is putting together a "how to" manual to assist future VVI Day committees. No point in reinventing the wheel! Although it is impossible to list everyone who assisted in making VVI Day a success/ we all know who you are/ and we want to express our gratitude for your cheerful helpfulness. Everyone who was approached for help unfailingly "volunteered." VVI Management has endorsed VVI DAY/ and it looks like it will be an annual event. Our thanks to management for supporting and funding this event. It was a much needed break from the day-to-day pressures everyone faces and an excellent morale booster. UNIVERSITY Of BRITISH COLUMBIA Department of Higher Education Higher Education 541 (College and Institute Programs') An analysis of the factors which contribute to the development of academic, technological, vocational, upgrading, and continuing education programs in colleges and institutes. Partricular reference will be made to British Columbia. TIME: 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 a.m. Mondays through Fridays DATES: JULY 6 to JULY 24 PLACE: Conference Room: South Staff Office Block Scarfe Building, INSTRUCTOR: John D. Dennison, Professor of Higher Education ******* Have You Wondered How Far.Things Can Go? "The skipper sat at the cockpit of his ketch strum¬ ming his persondolin and sipping his personhatton. He had fixed the yacht's personifold by clever reference to the engine personua! and was feeling quite pleased with himself. Engrossed as he was he didn't notice a persongylooking person gazing at him from the dock until his attention was gained by a thrown persongled persongo. It was personifest that it was persony years since the thrower had been a respected member of personkind. The newcomer had a fun-person-chu mustache and an unshaven persondible. The visitor explained "As a youth I lived like a persondarin, in a sumptuous personsion in the Isle of Person (which, of course, is why I have a Personx accent). I even had my personal personservant." Through an incredible series of events the person had fallen down a personhole in early personhood (his enemies having removed the personhole cover). Through devious personipulations the enemies had him hijacked, clapped in personacles and put aboard a ship bound for Personilla. He had personaged an escape by personipulating the lock on his personacles, narrowly missing committing personslaughter in the process. The skipper was touched by his tale of woe and promised passage back to Vancouver. They were three days out of Personilla when a person-o'-war hailed them. "Person the guns!" cried the passenger. "They are my enemies come to put me back in personacles!" By clever personeuvering the skipper eluded their pursuers. "Person," he exclaimed, "that was close. If they had sunk us we would have had to person the lifeboats. We can outwit them in the coming darkness and personnana is another day." Many readers will think this tale is pure personure—but it isn't —it is just one man's personner of wondering where, when we use terms like "chairperson", it will all end!
