vcc-MSuV OPEN HOUSE APRIL 25, 1986 AL INSTITUTE 3 It is impossible for anyone to judge the contributions of the many students and employees who donated their time and services to the VVI Open House. As early as April 1985, Mrs. Copson's Power Sewing Department was working with EXPO to produce banners and flags for the May 1985 opening of the Preview Centre. This participation has mushroomed as the actual opening of the world exposition has crept closer. In January of this year, Mrs. Copson was asked to produce flags for the EXPO Parade Staff. The order consisted of hemming, on all four sides, 432 pieces of nylon, twenty feet by ten inches, or approximately forty-two feet of hemming per piece. At a cost of $648.00 to EXPO, all 432 pieces were produced and delivered on time. A second and much larger order was commissioned near the end of February. This involved banners and flags to be used as part of the opening day ceremonies on May 2, 1986. A total of 750 pieces of work have been prepared in forty days. The bulk of these pieces were banners or raw silk, ten yards by one yard, hemmed on both ends and dyed in colours ranging cross the spectrum — bright yellow, saffron, orange sherbet, red, blue, purple, gold, and magenta. The rest of the order involved the preparation of bi-coloured flags of red and metallic gold. The total cost to EXPO was approximately $1125.00 and the order commissioned officially March 15, 1986 was ready for delivery on Apri1 20, 1986. The Power Sewing Department's excellent reputation reached the proper ears at EXPO 86 strictly through word of mouth and the result has been an enthusiastic and successful working partnership not limited to impersonal orders over the telephone. A good example of this camaraderie occurred when a portion of the March project arrived at the VVI cut to the wrong size. EXPO staff arrived shortly after Mrs. Copson notified them of the error and worked side by side with Mrs. Copson's class to cut the material into the proper size and meet the deadline. This working relationship has not only enhanced VVI's standing throughout the industry as a trainer of skilled and competent future employees, but it has provided the students involved with the invaluable experience of working on a well-known, highly publicized project, dealing with the stress of deadlines and the pressures of contract work comparable to what they would realistically expect to find in the work world. The very positive experience is topped only by the personal satisfaction to be gained by contributing, in a highly visual way, to the success of a project on the scale of the World Exposition in 1986. PACIFIC BAKER'S EXHIBITION The Pacific Baker's Exhibition will be held August 11 to 13 in B.C. Place Stadium and will be the largest show ever. VVI has been invited to compete in the exhibition and space has been allotted in the Baked Foods display area for a large window display by our students I HWR LIBRARY NEWS Film for April 29 . . .
