Gelling - Editor (Local 237) March 19, 1990 GOOD NEWS FROM C.E. have completed bar-coding all their books...you Continuing Education Director, Gail Rochester, advises that employees enroling in most C.E. do remember (don't you?) reading in the last issue of Centricity that the City Centre Library will be closed for four days to enable the library courses will no longer face the uncertainty of being bumped by fee paying students. Gail tells us that a spot will be available for eligible employees who meet the entrance requirements for a course. The exception would be certain courses in the general interest category where the fee includes supplies, rentals or transportation. Eligible employees are those eligible to receive College benefits. Employees requesting a fee waiver should send their request to John Vandenakker, stating name, home address to do this. The new system will provide a variety of computer automated library services. Using the new system you will be able to locate books, periodicals and audiovisual materials in a variety of ways including the customary searches by author, title, and subject. The VCC libraries on¬ line catalogue contains approximately 120,000 titles and, as new books are added to the system, the information is immediately available to OPAC. (including postal code) home phone number, Social Insurance Number, department, phone local and name, number and start date of the course. Each course will still, however, have to have the minimum number of fee payers required to run the course. Eventually the system will be linked to a circulation function giving users the status of each item - is it in or out? Hydro recently wrote John Vandenakker to give an update on the construction of their new COMPUTER LITERACY office building going in across the street. They advise that demolition activities are scheduled for completion by the end of April and then Session A Thursday, April 19 and Friday, April 20 13:00 to 16:00 each day excavation and shoring work will start. Major Room K10 - Langara equipment will be used for about ten weeks but they don't anticipate noise levels being any more than during the demolition. Foundations and construction is planned to begin on completion of the excavation and building structures should be above street levels by this time next year. A major public plaza will be completed on the 70' to 100' wide area immediately north of Dunsmuir, replacing the parking lots that used to be there. Hydro hopes to open a new parking garage (400 stalls) during the fall of 1991. All construction work is planned for completion by Spring 1992 and Hydro plans to occupy its new buildings in July 1992.
