0 UNOTITUTE VOLUME 3 : NUMBER 36 : OCTOBER 25, 1985 CRIMESTOPPERS TO THE RESCUE! nwuT! nGT 3 | if|i Paul Paulson's eagle-eyed Security Officer class is to be commended for the active part they played on Wednesday of this week in the -successful capture of felons intent upon ripping off a couple of cars in the DPC parking lot1.'. At approximately 11:30 a.m. an observant student in the class alerted his fellow classmates and Paul to what was occurring on the roof top below them. From their classroom on the northside, eighth floor of the Tower they had a birdseye view of four males obviously in the act of breaking and entering in to two cars parked on the top floor of the DPC Parking lot. Paul moved with dispatch to contact the Vancouver Police Department who, with Paul's and the class's blow by blow description of the movements of the bad guys, were able to make a successful arrest. As a result of Paul's call the constables had surrounded the building waiting for the dog squad to arrive but as chance would have it one of the suspects wandered over to the railing and spotted the police cars below on the street. Realizing that the long arm of the law was about to descend they tried to beat a hasty retreat down one of the stair wells. Fortunately, because the police dispatcher was relying on the class's observation of the suspects the police were able to head them off half way in the correct stairwell. Great work on the part of instructor Paul Paulson and the Security Officer's class'.lli SAJ UNITED WAY PANCAKE BREAKFAST The VVI Pancake Breakfast was, once again, a major success. This is no doubt a result of the excellent work of everyone at VVI, including the temporary chefs who did such a marvelous job of baking all those pancakes. My congratulations to everyone. HWR ' COMPUTER PROBLEMS The computing centre is having trouble with common problems such as fuses and switch settings being "fixed" by students using the equipment. Jim Chivas is asking that all equipment problems be passed on to the computing centre and that all instructors remind their students not to tinker please. OH institutional evaluation - program evaluation review committee This sub-committee of the Institutional Evaluation Steering Committee is proceeding with its task of: 1. Describing the V.C.C. review process and, if necessary, recommending changes or improvements to the existing process. 2. Addressing the task with the primary goal of assisting instructional programs in improving their services to their students and the community. 3. Examining the records of the program purpose and objective statement, development and amendment process, as approved by the College Board, with the view of possibly recommending a review process of these documents. To this end, the committee is anxious to have faculty input. Specifically at this time, input on the program review process from a faculty perspective. i.e., How are you currently involved in the review process? How would you like to see yourself involved in future program reviews? What is there about your program that should be brought out in a program review? What has been done by faculty to bring about this special focus? What information would you, as an instructor, need to have to better participate in an instructional program review? There are many more issues that the committee would like to hear about from you. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO LET US KNOW YOUR VIEWS. V6B 1S9 Dear Dr. Lamoureux: With U.B.C.'s recent decision to wind down its administration of the Ministry of Educa¬ tion's Instructor's Diploma Program, the Centre for Continuing Education now has the dubious task of completing a great number of participants presently enrolled in the pro¬ gram. Copies of letters sent to all participants and Principals announcing this decision are enclosed. Two major decisions were made. One was to temporarily freeze admissions into the program, and the other was to hire a part-time coorindator to manage the wind-down. I have been hired to take on the latter. As such, I have only a few, yet major, objec¬ tives. The most difficult is to determine each participant's stage of completion and establish means to complete everyone. A second is to establish ties with various insti¬ tutions and corporations who are sponsoring participants, to set up opportunities to attend and complete the various courses. The third objective is to accomplish the first two in a cost effective manner. I would, therefore, like to take this opportunity to officially introduce myself and open up the lines of communication. I am happy to take on this responsibility and will do my utmost to make the process as smooth and convenient for all concerned as I possibly can. At this point, I only wish to let you know that there is "someone in the office," to advise you that options will be announced and negotiated with you soon and to ask you to "step forward" in the meantime with any suggestions as to how we can meet the specific needs of those participants enrolled in ID who are presently under your direc¬ tion and who wish to complete. Vou can contact me by phone directly at 222-5222 or by writing to the ID office at the usual address shown above. I look forward to working with you over the next year. Yours truly, Coordinator Instructor's Diplom Program
