lum w Voncouw MAY 2 5 1893 CITY CENTRE Volume 4, Issue 8 May 21,1993 Victoria Day The Monday before May 24 Since 1952, the Monday before May 24 has been celebrated with fireworks and festivities as Victoria Day even though Queen Victoria, whose birthday is being honoured, has been dead for many years. Throughout the British Empire in the 19th century it was the custom to celebrate the monarch's birthday officially. Queen Victoria ruled for so many years that Canadians got very accustomed to having a holiday on the 24th of May, and so her birthday has become a permanent Canadian holiday, except in Quebec where the holiday is called Fete de Dollard des Ormeaux. We now honour Queen Elizabeth II as well on this day, although her actual birthday comes earlier in the spring, on April 21. In Victoria, B.C., celebrations of Queen Victoria's birthday are especially lavish. For many years hundreds of children have gathered on Friday morning for maypole dancing on the lawns in front of the Parliament Buildings. In the evening there is a May Queen Ball. Next day there are all kinds of Victorian events, such as a contest for the best period costume, a rally and display of vintage cars and beard and moustache contests. After Sunday-morning church services, there is a huge sailpast in the harbour. Decorated boats parade past the admiral of the fleet from the nearby naval college. Sunday evening a new teen May Queen is crowned. The highlight of the holiday weekend is a three-hour parade on Monday. About 40 different bands take part, and most of them warm up all weekend with concerts across the city. Plus there are floats, clowns, decorated cars and horses and costumed citizens. Now that's some birthday bash! On the Six Nations Reserve near Branford, Ontario, Victoria Day is called Independence Day, or Bread and Cheese Day. Every year the residents of the reserve line up outside their community centre in the morning to receive gifts of bread and cheese from government agents. This is an old custom, begun by agents of the Queen on May 24, 1837. In the afternoon, the day is celebrated with cultural displays, horse races and ball games.
