COPYRIGHT UPDATE — FROM THE LIBRARY By now we've accumulated several years of experience in brokering copyright requests for all VVI campus departments; enough to have determined the typical responses and requirements of many publishers and producers. We find, for instance, that: - few publishers grant blanket permissions, even if their material is used for educational purposes, therefore, individual letters with request specifications are required in most instances; - many copyright owners are pleased to see their materials used for educational purposes, and do not charge a fee for reproduction, however, others require the payment of a fee in order to make such copies; - almost all copyright owners stipulate that a copyright notice (e.g. "reproduced with permission from - - appear on the front page of each reproduction; some publishers request submission of a copy of the intended reproduction, showing this copyright notice In order to streamline and speed up the copyright clearance procedure for both instructional departments and for the library, we have devised a standard letter of request and a reproduction request form (see attached) for copyright clearances. A supply of the request forms has been sent to each department for use in submitting requests to the Library. If you need additional copies of the form, please contact the Library (Jean Deer at Local 297). Please remember that it is usually cheaper, faster, and easier to put one or several copies of a printed item, which your students are required to read, on RESERVE in the Library. We will obtain permission for reproduction of these, loan them to the students, and return them to you upon request. However, if a handout is required, please submit the particulars of your request on the form provided. Our copyright files are growing larger, as more publishers have been contacted and responses received. You're more than welcome to have a look at the variety of responses received to date. Or, if you have any questions, come in to the Library. We'll do our best to help. Watch for an update on the Computer Software Licenses in a forthcoming edition of the VVInsider. In the three years since it has been developed, the test has shown that few people could solve more than half of the 25 questions on the first try. Many, however, reported getting answers long after the test had been set aside, particularly at unexpected moments when their minds were relaxed. Some reported solving all the questions over a period of several days. Take this as your personal challenge!!
