Please send your teaching and learning comments and questions to: The Teaching and Learning Column, c/o Patricia Morris. Today's topic: ' ' ' i' ' , | s "CAN INSTRUCTORS REALLY HELP PEOPLE LEARN" This question shifts the focus of instruction from instructor activity to learner activity. That is, from seeing instructors as pitchers pouring information into empty vessels to seeing instructors as tour guides directing people to a common destination and pointing out significant sights along the journey. The role of the instructor as someone who imparts knowledge shifts to the dual roles of manager and coach. The manager designs and coordinates events and procedures which are required for learners to achieve desired outcomes; and the coach paves the way for the learning process. The essential requirement of a manager in a learner-centered approach is that the plan or desired outcome is stated and compared to the actual learner outcome. The instructional activity includes the specification, organization and sequencing of learning tasks which influence the activity of the learner. The instructor as a coach helps learners transform themselves into "self-teachers". The classroom provides many opportunities for teaching learning strategies. For example, when an instructor uses an analogy to help make a new concept more meaningful, s/he can also create the opportunity to pause and discuss the rationale for using this techniques as a teaching strategy showing how "learners can create their own analogies as a learning strategy. By thinking of teaching and learning as a cooperative venture, instructors are no longer required to be star performers in the tradition of the "great lecturer". Rather they can hone their skills as guides managing and coaching the journey. As instructors we can see ourselves as gatekeepers; standing at the boundary of the old and the new worlds we hold the keys for successful passage. CAREER OPPORTUNITY VCC requires an Instructor of Japanese Cooking who will provide students with intensive training in the preparation, cooking and presentation of Japanese food.
