What is the Michelangelo Virus & why should you care? It's a "virus" that will trash your personal com¬ puter's hard drive and send all the information contained on it into the ozone never to be recovered again. This "virus" "infects" personal computers then lies dormant until the internal clock reaches the famous Italian artist's birthday, March 6th, 1992. What is a "virus"? A "virus" is computer language for a piece of pro¬ gramming that is spread from hard drive to hard drive by means of floppy diskettes without the knowledge of the operator. This "virus" affects all International Business Machines Corp. and IBMcompatible personal computers that rely on the computer standard operating system know as DOS. How is it spread? Anytime a floppy disk is inserted into your hard drive and the information is read or information is written to the disk the "virus" is able to "infect" your computer's hard drive. Is your hard drive "infected'? The only way to know if your hard drive has "caught the virus" is to check the hard drive with a piece of computer software called SCAN. This software is available from John Roberts in ICS at local 8369. There have been a number of "viruses" ranging from amusing to devastating in Is there a cure? Yes! Take a formatted diskette to John Roberts and he will supply you with a copy of the SCAN soft¬ ware. Once you run this software on your hard drive "stoned virus" which it will tell you if your hard drive has any "viruses" and will give you directions on how to remove them. It will also allow you to "clean" all your floppy diskettes, and check any diskettes that may come freezes computers as from other users to prevent recontamination. their effect. An example is the the message reading "your computer is stoned; legalize mari¬ juana" scrolls across Don' t Delay tlie screen. f/inoculate Your Computer Should I act on this right away? Your cards, notes, letters and calls that followed were greatly appreciated and have certainly done wonders to lift Betsy's spirits. She speaks so fondly and glowingly of her memories here at VCC. She cherishes all the words that have been sent her way and has warmly mentioned them all to me when I have visited with her. Names of the wonderful folks who have been able to take the time have been affectionately recited and many of your thoughtful words have been quoted aloud. Thank you all. The lungs may be ravaged with cancer, the heart may be weaker than ever in her lifetime, but that doesn't stop "Our Betsy" from planning. Those big, blue eyes are still very bright and determined (weren't they always?!). Your thoughts and wishes provide so much of the energy boost. "I go from deadline to deadline", she tells me. "And I just made the current deadline, as I planned — my birthday!" Betsy celebrated her 83rd birthday on St. Valentine's Day. Perhaps you would like to send off a note to Betsy is you haven't yet done so. Or, maybe you would like to send off another. And, even if you did not know "Our Betsy" all that personally, she would still love to hear a word from you. She established a lot of fundamental groundwork and leadership on behalf of us all. She will always be appreciated and fondly remembered. Let's give her heart and spirits another boost! Carol was one of a small group of employees to join VCC shortly after it became independent from the Vancouver School Board in 1975. The institution was known then as Vancouver city college and from that time onward Carol worked in the payroll department. A Memorial Service for Carol was held on Saturday, Feb¬ ruary 1, 1992 at Ryerson United Church, with a floral tribute sent on behalf of VCC employees. Friends and coworkers will remember Carol for her happy smile and generous ways. For many years she was active in the Vancouver branch of Girl Guides of Canada an a memo¬ rial fund in her name will be established to provide scholarships for guides wishing to attend Camp Olave.
