BURNOUT N People working in social services have problems maintaining enthusiasm for their jobs. Through the use of fast paced vignettes, this amusing film shows how to cope with stress while remaining compassionate. High technical quality; excellent sound track. JD QUICK NOTES ON THE CAMPUS - The College Board approved the Electrolysis program and the Industrial Computer Awareness program at its last meeting. - On March 16 the New Zealand Consul and Trade Commissioner, Mr. Tony Pervan, hosted a dinner at VVI for 75 members of the B.C. Chef's Association. - WI instructors and students won a number of silver and bronze awards at the B.C. Chef's Association's Culinary Arts Show held in the Robson Media Square on March 19. Congratulations to all involved. - Thanks to Counselling and the College's Public Relations Department for their colourful advertising display at the Food Trades Show at the P.N.E. - March 29 the B.C. Hospitality Resource Centre closed shop at VVI and relocated its base in Victoria. The library is still holding all film and video materials though. - Brian Dwyer is undertaking a special contract received from International Rail Consultants at the request of CIDA, to provide an educational consultant of railway manpower training systems in Tanzania and Kenya, and the facilities of the current training contractors in India and Northern Ireland. Brian left for the first portion of the contract on March 29. mmouvEU COfVMMITY COllEG Vancouver Vocational Institute VCC-VANCOUVER VOCATIONAL INSTITf — LIBiiARY PRESIDENT'S REPORT TO THE BOARD - The initiation of the Handiperson Training has previously been reported to the Board. In this connection a Youth Training Option pilot program, covering ten skills activity areas has been mounted: Operating Engineer's Helper; Security Guard's Helper; Cleaner's Helper; Landscape Maintenance Helper; Mover's Helper; General Cafeteria and Food Service Helper; Laundry Helper; Telephone and General Office Helper; and Mailroom Helper. Twenty trainees enrolled on February 18 for 13 weeks of classroom and lab training on campus, to be followed by 25 weeks of work experience. Five private sector companies as well as College maintenance and support departments are involved as Training Place hosts. - A two-day workshop was held in cooperation with the Ministry of Education for Vision-Impaired Teachers in BC on the use of computer technology for teaching visually-impaired students. A public demonstration of equipment and an explanation of the goals of the workshop was held February 21. The workshop, due to equipment limitations, accommodated only 30 people, however, the demo was very well attended. Guest presenters included Lynne Laird, California School for the Blind, Berkeley; Linda DeLucchi and Larry Malone, University of California, Lawrence Hall of Science, Berkeley, California. - In an action falling out of the College Board's approval of the 1985/86 operating budget, on March 23, the College Executive Committee has approved a charge of $1 per Calendar over-the-counter, and $3 per Calendar by mail for the 85/86 Calendar. Institutional distribution shall continue free of charge. - On March 1, Continuing Education held graduation ceremonies for sixteen students of the Career Awareness Program. At the ceremony a donation of two micro-computers was accepted by the College and deep appreciation was expressed to Mr. Norman Gould of the Vancouver Kiwanis Club. This generous gift will assist students in the Career Awareness Program to upgrade their basic literacy and numeric skills. - At the Totem Conference championship round held at Douglas College held March 8 and 9 FIRST Women's Basketball, coached by Jerry McDonnell FIRST Men's Basketball, coached by Duncan McGalium Badminton coached by NOrm Olenik Men's singles (Jeff Bray) Men's doubles (Anil Kaul & Brad Johnston) Women's singles (Elizabeth Chiang) FIRST FIRST SECOND In Saskatoon, Jeff Bray shared third place nationally, and in men's doubles, Anil Kaul and Brad Johnston placed second. The national basketball championship will be held in Moose Jaw March 26 to 31. Congratulations and good luck! HWR TRAIN THE TRAINER The Train the Trainer program is comprised of four, thirty-hour courses — Program Design, Giving of Instruction, Evaluation of Learning and a Practicum. College instructors are exempt from the practicum. The Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) or the Instructors Diploma I.D. 101 is the equivalent of the Giving of Instruction course. All courses emphasize a highly practical hands-on approach to instructor training. Each of the first three courses begins with a review of core skills common to the three courses. These core skills including writing performance objectives and learning tasks, lesson planning and conducting one or more mini-lessons. If the following times are not convenient for you, please advise the VVI Student Registration Department (681-8111, Local 200) and a suitable time may be arranged to suit your schedule.
