COMPUTER FUNDING FOR THE V.V.I. IfljU-VANUUUVtn vuUAl iUNAL lUolllUtl:

Last week the federal government approved approximately $700,000 for
additional computer equipment for the province of B.C. All this money
was allocated to the V.V.I., (where else should it go?), and

approximately $500,000 is for a computer aided drafting system for the
Drafting Department, and approximately $200,000 is allocated to
V.V.I./Continuing Education for a Youth Job Project.

CONTINUING EDUCATION FEES
The College Board approved an increase in fees for Continuing
Education courses. Fees will rise approximately 20% from $2.40 per
hour to $3.00 per hour in order to compensate for the withdrawal of
the administrative grant.

RESPONSE TO THE FIVE YEAR PLAN
The response by the Ministry of Education to the Five Year Plan is
basically as follows:
- strategies proposed by VCC to increase productivity have been noted

and gains can likely be realized following their implementation;
- as a result of the universities raising tuition fees and
restricting freshman enrolment, increased priority should be placed
on the Arts and Science programs;
- the Ministry recognizes the directions of the College with
reference to the Pacific Rim impetus of downtown Vancouver and

specific program changes should be detailed to the Ministry before
implication. Some of these programs include computer assisted
drafting and electronics. Privatization in office-related programs
must also be carefully considered when future course plans are
formulated;
- there will be probably be no funding to 'alleviate overcrowding at
the Langara campus and the alternative may be to deplgy some
Langara programs to other College space;
- the Ministry is encouraging the College to explore various methods
of acquiring necessary capital funds and new equipment;
- a commendation was forwarded to the College for the quality of its
environmental scan;
- the Five Year Plan of the College reflected a realistic approach to
the future and subject to funds being available, and approval of
proposals, the directions and positions established in the plan
were endorsed.

I am pleased to announce that Mr. Frank Frandsen has been re-appointed to
the position of Department Head, Printing Production Department, from

1984 April 01 to 1987 March 31. HWR

24 HOUR RELAY FOR THE B.C. LIONS SOCIETY FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN
A number of V.V.I, personnel have already indicated their willingness to
participate in this year's relay. (Registration, if the same as last

year, will be $5.00 per person). Some complete families will be
participating including: Larry and Suzanne Sunnel; Myrna Breikss,

husband, and daughter; Chester Spinks and daughter; Bill Edwards and
sons; plus other returnees such as Norm McLeod, John Spencer, Dom Buono,
and Dalton Kremer.
Showing a real interest are newcomers Dorothy Ho, Charise Bryan, Allan
Clarkson, John Vandenakker, A1 Barnard, and Cathy Perrat. For anyone
wishing to run, we need your registration money as soon as possible'. If
anyone is interested in participating, please let Dalton Kremer know and
he will even provide you with a handout on how to train. This group is

of the opinion that they could at least have one full team of 20 runners
