If you have not completed the I.D. or its equivalent and need more information about your status, please call me at local 245. MEL NOTIFICATION OF SUPPORT STAFF VACANCIES We recently received complaints from a number of employees that such notices of vacancy are not appearing in sufficient time to allow for response by the established closing date. The VMREU Collective Agreement requires the College to post all notices of vacancy for a minimum of five (5) working days. In investigating we have discovered that time is being lost in the mail and sort system within the College. In order to overcome this problem, the Personnel Department will increase the closing date by one (1) day, and in some cases - two (2) days. At the same time, we will endeavour to expedite the mailing and sorting of all notices of vacancy. In the event you do not become aware of a specific posting in sufficient time to prepare and forward an applicaton to the Personnel Department, a telephone call to Personnel to affirm interest will be satisfactory. The formal letter or resume can then be sent to the Personnel Department within a day or two. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you encounter any difficulties in this regard. MEL AWARD WINNING COST CUTTING METHODS The following is an excerpt from the "CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION," 1984 07 08 Using credit cards instead of purchase orders for buying supplies is expected to save Lane Community College, (Eugene, Oregon) more than $118,000 a year. The credit card idea also won the college a top price of $7,500 in this year's "cost-reduction incentive awards" program sponsored by the National Steel Foundation. Cost-reduction prizes of $7,500 each were also awarded to Indiana University-Purdue at Indianapolis and to Linfield College. On the Indianapolis campus, an ultra-sound technique is used to check steam traps in the heating system. High-frequency sounds reveal faulty traps that cannot be detected visually, resulting in savings estimated at $285,000 a year. At Linfield College, badly scarred walls in residence halls are resurfaced by using a spatter gun that sprays a compound that covers holes, bumps, and patches. Besides making the walls look better, the college estimated the process results in savings of $12,000 a year... more to follow in upcoming issues...
