V6T 1Z5 COMMUNITY NEWS RELEASE 875-1131 Relations August 26, 1985 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Paul Gallagher, President, Vancouver Commum'ty College, and Dan Birch, Acting Vice-President Academic, University of British Columbia, today announced that the Minister of Education has informed them that the Dental Hygiene program presently offered' at I).B.C. will be offered by V.C.C. as of September, 1986. During the year leading up to the commencement of the program at V.C.C. College personnel will be working closely with the U.B.C. Faculty of Dentistry to ensure maintenance of the high standards developed by the Faculty of Dentistry and the College of Dental Surgeons. V.C.C. President Gallagher noted the Dental Hygiene program would be a natural complement to other medical and dental programs which have long been part of the Collegers offerings. V.C.C. presently offers nursing, nursing orderly, dental assisting, dental technician, and denturist programs. U.B.C. Vice-President Birch observed that the announcement might herald a new era of collaberation between the university and the college. He expects there will be a continuing close relationship between the Dental Hygiene program and the Faculty of Dentistry with particular emphasis on the clinical dimensions of the program The announcement is seen by observers at both institutions as an expression of Education Minister Heinrich^s known interest in program rationalization in the education field. He is expected to watch with close interest the development of the Dental Hygiene program at the college level. - 30 - Contact: V.C.C. - Cam Avery - Paul Gallagher U.B.C. - Dan Birch Continuing King Edward 875-1131 875-1131 228-4948 Langara Vancouver DEPARTMENT OF ADMINISTRATIVE, ADULT AND HIGHER EDUCATION THU UNIVF.RSITY OF BRITISH COI.UMBIA Higher Education courses to be offered in 1985-86 regular session Higher Education 510 (1.5) Foundations for the Study of Higher Education.
