January 11, 1990 Strachan tours City Centre & KEC Recently appointed Minister of Advanced Education, Training and Technology, Bruce Strachan, visited VCC just before the Christmas break, and had a chance to see activities at both City Centre and King Edward Campus. Since being appointed to his new portfolio, the minister has been touring several post-secondary educational institutions throughout the province. On his visit to VCC he was accompanied by Dr. Jack Newberry, the Ministry's Director of Lower Mainland Colleges. Both College President Paul Gallagher and Board Chairperson Colleen Miller were on hand to greet the minister and act as host for the tour. Strachan's first stop was City Centre where he was welcomed by Dean of Instruction, Marvin Lamoureux and Dean of Administration and Student Services, John Vandenakker. The tour began on the 7th floor of the tower, with a look at our "state of the art" computer graphics program. It was hard to tell which was more impressive: the stunning view of the harbour or the wizardry of the latest software being demonstrated by students. Bruce Strachan (second from left) takes a closer look at the KEC Auto Mechanics Program, along with (from left to right) Career Division Chairman Sam Lewindon, Dean of Instruction and Student Services Patricia Groves, Associate Dean of Instruction Norm Dooley and VCC Board Chairperson Colleen Miller. From there it was a quick hop to dental hygiene and then on to the kitchens where Culinary Arts Department Head Ulrich Falter gave a spirited demonstration of the various aspects of his program. The minister then had a chance to sample those culinary skills over lunch at JJ's. In the afternoon the Minister moved over to KEC, beginning with a brief orientation from Principal Lawrence Fast and Dean of See next page Vancouver Community College Kina Fflward Cnmp'ts - Libr^i l^NCOU^ER COMMUNITY COLl^W^ PQ Pox 2 16/0 - Stn C | l 5S Ln^t Broadway Vancouver, R C. After visiting several ESL classes and the Auto Mechanics program, the minister ended his day with a brief meeting of College Officials and Board Members. Care and Share brightens holidays City Centre's Care and Share fund has been bringing Christmas cheer into the lives of needy students for the last nine years, and this Christmas was no exception. The Care and Share fund was set up in 1980 by City Centre's Building Services Manager George Clark along with Jenny Williams, who was at the time the campus financial aid adviser. From the beginning, the fund also has benefitted from the hard work and dedication of City Centre's Security Supervisor Mike Foort. After a modest beginning the fund has grown and this year it distributed $3,500 to 42 students and their families during the holiday season. Care and Share activities, including the holiday carolling at City Centre, also raised an additional $1,700 for use during Christmas 1990. "We started the fund by giving out two small food hampers," explains Clark. "But over the years it's grown. We felt it was important to look after people right here in our own neighbourhood, and give them some help, especially at Christmas time." For City Centre's current Financial Aid Adviser, Dana Fister, giving out the Care and Share bursaries is one of her favourite tasks. "The students are usually very Care and Share Auctioneer Jackie Sandy takes the $100 winning bid for a gingerbread house donated by Security Co-ordinator Mike Foort while Health Sciences Division Chairperson Linda Martin looks on. surprised and really grateful." Fister explains that all the recipients are students with children. "This year 35 were single parents," said Fister. "They're the ones who really have the hardest time. Often they don't have anyone else to turn to for help, particularly at Christmas." Care and Share fund are always welcome. For more information contact Clark at local 281, City Centre.
