In preparing Scanning a Local Newspaper, exercises have been developed which adult ESL and literacy students will find interesting and relevant to their lives as consumers. Students will also learn to scan non-prose parts of the newspaper with increasing speed. These exercises are intended to be snappy and easy to use. This book was first written for and tested with adult Lower Intermediate ESL students at King Edward Campus, Vancouver Community College using Vancouver newspapers. However, Scanning a Local Newspaper could also be used at higher or lower ESL levels or with adult literacy classes. Similar exercises could be developed from newspapers in your town.
