This book was written for students of English as a second language reading at the Intermediate level. Although the vocabulary has not been rigidly controlled, most of it lies within the first 1,500 words of English. When I began this project, I was dismayed by the lack of suitable Canadian content reading material for ESL learners. While being focused on the development of reading skills, vocabulary enhancement, and grammatical practice, the stories will, we hope, introduce our students to some of the people who have contributed to the vibrancy of the Canadian experience.
